Abstract
Gas district cooling system operates on similar principle as a vapor compression
cycle cooling system using gas as fuel. Thus it gains the economics as well as
environmental benefits of a distributed cooling network and the mitigated CO2 emission
levels of utilizing natural gas. Various countries in North America, Western Europe,
Middle East and Asia have installed similar systems either on commercial or institutional
basis. Malaysia has been in the forefront of gas district cooling schemes with seven such
installations taking advantage of an available natural gas grid called the Peninsular Gas
Utilization Networks. With the obvious economic and environmental benefits, more district
cooling systems should be established in Malaysia in the near future.
