Abstract
The efficacy of removing chloroform from water using photocatalytic reaction was studied using Ag/TiO2 . In this preliminary study, 2379 ppb chloroform solution was degraded using different dosages of the 1% silver content (mole ratio) Ag/TiO2 which was prepared using liquid impregnation method. Dosages of 0.5 g/L, 1.0 g/L, 1.5 g/L, 2.0 g/L and 2.5 g/L of Ag/TiO2 were used with and without UV irradiation. The results show that the removal of chloroform perform better under UV irradiation. At the same 1.5 g/L Ag/TiO2 concentration, 93.86% and 92.4% of chloroform was degraded with and without UV irradiation, respectively. This study shows that both conditions offer good removal efficiency and therefore has the potential to be applied in removing chloroform from water. Further studies will be conducted to determine the optimum dosage of the catalyst, silver content, reaction time and the energy consumption, to evaluate the suitability of using Ag/TiO2 in removing chloroform from water. The concentration of chloroform was analyzed using HACH THM PlusTM Method.
