Abstract
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are chemical compounds with known carcinogenic and mutagenic characteristics. The USEPA has classified 16 PAHs as priority pollutants. The carcinogenic and mutagenic character of PAHs is correlated to their stereochemical aspects: structural, electronic, stability, reactivity, etc. In order to quantify the rate of formation and/or degradation of PAHs, thermo-kinetic analysis could be employed. Common methods for PAH degradation include physical method of using thermal treatment at high-temperature and chemical method involving reaction with suitable agents. Low-temperature thermal treatment combined with catalyst and proper adjustment of operational factors such as temperature, amount of excess oxygen (oxygen:carbon ratio), hydrogen to carbon ratio, heating time etc. can provide efficient degradation of PAHs.
