Abstract

The application of gravity model to estimate the
trip distribution of bus service passenger is presented. This
model has been used in modeling such as freight transport,
pedestrian, and vehicular transport. However, so far it has not
been applied specifically in bus passenger trips distribution. To
manage passenger trips and to improve bus system service, the
passenger trips or bus service demand is necessary to be
assessed. The analysis and assessment are performed for
estimating the trip distribution each pair of origin and
destination zone. In this case, therefore, a regular stage bus
service operated in mixed traffic at corridor level, with long
distance route, low loading passengers, and low level of service
is assessed. Data was collected by performing on board survey
include route distance, location and frequency of stopping,
passengers of boarding and alighting. By using the passenger of
boarding and alighting data, the gravity model is calibrated for
estimating the bus passenger trip distribution. The result shows
that the gravity model is applied appropriately to estimate bus
passenger trip distribution. The model is helpful to estimate
and to assess the trip distribution of bus service passenger each
pair of sub zones. This contribute to a better management of
passenger trips, the more reliable bus service, and other service
operations.
