Abstract
This paper presents the bus operation characteristics and performance indicators as a preliminary
study in promoting public transport. A case study based on the Ipoh-Lumut corridor in
Perak was conducted. The current bus system has a number of problems, such as limitation of
facilities, use of low quality buses, inconvenience of fleets, low passenger trips, long waiting
time, etc. Long waiting time, typically more than 40 minutes is very common, thus making the
system unattractive to passengers. The buses only represent about 2% of traffic volume. The
travel by passenger car increases rapidly but the road capacity is limited, thus some alternative
form of public transport must be provided. The study aims to analyze the bus operation characteristics
and performance indicators of the current bus system. The results show the deficiencies
of bus service make the current bus system unattractive to passengers. This works will address
issues in public transport development that will enhance the efficiency of traffic, safety and environment
sustainability.
