Abstract

This paper focuses on the development of an indoor location system using WLAN IEEE 802.11b in an Access Point (AP) infrastructure network. The system was developed in MATLAB platform that comprised of signal strength database, client-server interface and graphical user interface (GUI). The location sensing algorithm used for the system is the Nearest Neighbor (NN) algorithm. The basic idea is to build a database of signal strength values for various predetermined locations. Using the NN algorithm, this database is used to determine a particular location for a given set of signal strength. The performance of the system is measured in terms of average error distance and accuracy. From several testing done, it was shown that the system has an average error distance and accuracy of 5 m and 72.2% respectively.
