Abstract

An ecosystem is a self-sustaining, self-organizing, collaborative and evolving environment. Ecosystem exists in nature as a biological ecosystem of living and non living species and their physical environment. This paper carries a thorough comparative analysis and analogy between different types of ecosystems and further suggests a sustainable, stable and formidable framework of Digital Business Ecosystem (DBE) for Malaysian SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprise) and its subsequent deployment plan. It is hoped to contribute to the domain of business information system and subsequent DBE deployment in Malaysia. Furthermore, the intent of the study is to contribute to the definition of the ICT research priorities with respect to the DBE which has already been taken as a pilot project in Europe. The same concept of digital ecosystems in Europe that support SMEs and regional development is hoped to be inherited to Malaysian SMEs in specific and to the 3rd world countries in general. Recent studies converge towards a research framework that will integrate social science and natural science questions and concerns within an advanced program of research in computer science and software engineering. The objective of the advanced research study outlined is to develop an integrated ICT development and ICT adoption strategy. It will help finding its natural expression in the different regions of Malaysia by taking the networked organizations into account in pursuit of DBE. The research should help Malaysian SMEs advance side by side in Information Society and Knowledge Economy analogous to European SMEs as per objectives laid down in Lisbon Strategy for the later. The research objectives are to be aligned with the policies of Small and Medium Enterprise Corporation Malaysia (SME Corp. Malaysia) running under Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI).
