Abstract

Photovoltaic (PV) is a technology in which solar radiation is converted to electrical power, that is, direct current. The use of PV as power source for water pumping activities is one of the promising areas in PV application. The objective of this study is to develop a software that can be used as guidelines for developing suitable PV based irrigation system. This paper presents the design and the technical requirements of a PV powered water pumping system for irrigation. The design of the PV system is based on the estimation of the water requirement, pumping system selection and sizing, PV arrays sizing, load matching circuit design, along with the meteorological data of the site location. Java language was employed in the development of the software.
