Abstract

In this paper we consider energy efficient clustering
based data gathering in WSN and an Energy Efficient Multi
Hierarchy clustering protocol for Wireless Sensor Network
(EMHC) is presented. In EMHC, in addition to normal capability sensor nodes some nodes with additional energy
resources termed as super node are deployed to achieve energy efficiency. Multi hierarchy clustering is achieved by placing super nodes (acting as local sink) at the top tier, cluster head (normal node) at the middle tier and cluster member (normal node) at lowest tier in the hierarchy. Clustering in normal sensor nodes is done by optimizing energy efficiency as well as coverage. In EMHC, for improving coverage and energy efficiency cluster head selection algorithm and sleep wakeup scheduling algorithm is proposed. Simulations are carried out to evaluate the performance of EMHC by comparing its performance with LEACH and EEMC. Simulation results demonstrate that EMHC is effective in prolonging the network lifetime as well as in improving throughput than LEACH and EEMC.
