Abstract

A large shortage of water resources in Iraq is caused due to the dams’ establishment by the Turkish side on Tigris & Euphrates Rivers. Accordingly, the Iraqi authorities started to seek for new cooling techniques in the thermal power plants. This work deals with design of large capacity cooling towers to suit closed cooling system of 200 M watt thermal power plant .The design considers the tower characteristics, fill size, fill type and evaporation losses. The hydrothermal process represents the cooling tower operation is modeled mathematically and is converted to computer program. Among two modeling technique, the empirical one is adopted. The model aims to estimate the design variable under different percentage of water addition to the closed circuit (10%, 20%, 30% and 40%). Two types of cooling towers have been investigated under consideration of using different type locally made fills. The results are demonstrating that the counter flow type is more efficient and is having smaller size. Also, it is demonstrated that there is optimum size for the cooling tower. It is highly recommended to design the cooling system under 10% to 20 % mixing ratio and to operate with about 30% addition water from the river.
